Hoshana Raba is an usual holiday. Like Purim and Erev Yom Kippur, it is a holiday without restrictions. That means that it’s okay to drive, cook, use electricity, make phone calls, send emails, etc. but is a day permeated with holiness, repentance and prayer
According to the Kabalah on Hoshana Raba the judgment which was rendered on Rosh Hashana and inscribed on Yom Kippur is sealed today. As we do on Purim and before Yom Kippur, we eat kreplach, to signify Hashem‘s mercy encasing His judgment
Ukrainian Jews would commemorate Hoshana Raba with hallot baked in the shape of a hand open to recieve (pitka or kvitel) containing a good judgment. The greeting for this day is “Have a Gite Kvitel (a good note)”

How nice and I could eat the challah right off the page. Did you really make this? Funny, my grandmother usually made twists and I don’t think I saw a round challah until we moved out of the Bronx. Got any info on that? Grandma Eva was here yesterday and we had a good talkfest. Best Wishes for a Gite Kvitel!
