Many years ago a couple lived together in a small Polish shtetl . Though they were both basically good people, they had a disagreement they couldn’t resolve. In time their difference grew so severe that they were contemplating divorce. But before throwing in the towel they sought counsel from the local wise man who happened to be the Koshnitzer Maggid (some say he was the Apter Rov. Hassidic stories are often attributed to more than one source)
.The Maggid or the Rov wanted to know what the problem was. It turned out that it was all about the kugel and when to eat it. It seems that the husband wanted it for Shabbos lunch alongside the meat, but the wife wanted it to be served after Kiddush, (the Shabbos morning breakfast snack) instead.
BOTH insisted that their way was correct and neither would budge.
The Rov(or the Maggid depending on which version of the story you are hearing) had a novel solution. He told the wife to bake two kugels, one for Kiddush and the second for lunch. The couple were thrilled , and the Rov or the Maggid called the new kugel, Shalom Bayis Kugel
Shalom Bayis which literally means a peaceful house is the general term for marital harmony. I got this recipe from an illustrious Rebetzin who told me that it is also known as Bukoviner Kugel after the Rumanian town of the same name. Here’s how to make it. Freezes well too.
Boil one package of noodles until soft
Drain
Add one teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper and two eggs lightly beaten
Poured the mixture into a greased loaf pan and bake for 45 minutes at medium heat
Optional add one sauted onion into the noodle egg mixture before baking . Yummy
Love the name of this kugel, and it is true that food issues can spell trouble if you let it :)
